Do Pawn Shops Take Timex Watches

Timex watches have been around for years, so it’s not uncommon to ask if that’s something that most pawn shops would consider taking in for a loan or offer to buy.

Some classic Timex watches may have some decent value. Newer Timex’s are typically nowhere near as valuable or desirable however unfortunately, so a lot of this will depend on what type of watch you have exactly.

How 'Pawnable' Is This Item

What Value Does This Item Have

In terms of both pawn ability and value, Timex watches score ‘Fair’ marks in both categories.

Older, more collectible Timex watches, like those built with movement #31 and #32 are the workhorses of the vintage Timex market. They aren’t pretty and aren’t built with jewels like Rolex watches for instance, but for the right person, they have value. The Timex 17 and 21 series will also have some decent value, as well as the Timex Marlin Series watches.

These Timex’s would be considered fairly pawnable and bring a little bit of extra money. You won’t get hundreds of dollars for them, but to the right pawnbroker, you might be in the $20-$40 range.

All other Timex’s would largely be considered unpawnable and have little to no value.

What To Bring With You:

  • If you have any of these older Timex’s, any original packaging would be a huge plus. Extra bands or accessories would also be beneficial.
  • If you have any service records for your watch, it wouldn’t hurt to bring those along with you, but it may not add much value for the pawnbroker.
  • If the watch requires a battery to run, make sure that it has a fresh battery and is in good running condition. A pawnbroker will almost certainly not take a Timex that doesn’t run.

Most pawn shops will be looking for a slightly higher end watch than a Timex; just under half of all pawnshops nationally tend to be willing to accept Timex’s. Equally, pawn shops don’t place a whole lot of value, or desirability, in Timex watches as a brand. They just aren’t the timepiece that they are really after.

All timepieces tend to hold a special place in their owners heart, and as a general rule of thumb, roughly 50% of customer that pawn a Timex watch come back to redeem it.

Only 10% of households will have a Timex watch, and even a lower percentage than that will have a Timex that is desirable enough to be able to pawn or sell at a pawnshop. Those that do however tend to just make loans on it so that they can get it back at a later point in time versus outright selling it.

What Are Some Advantages To Pawning This Type Of Item

  • You can typically get a reasonable lower-dollar loan on collectible Timex’s or Timex watches with the more desirable movements.
  • These loans are typically easier to pay back because of their lower dollar amount.

What Are Some Drawbacks To Pawning This Type Of Item

  • Unfortunately, most Timex’s are not desirable and therefore do no bring a huge amount of money from a pawnshop.
  • Most Timex’s overall are simply not accepted for having a value that is too low.

Nobody likes hearing that their items aren’t valuable enough to make a loan on them and most pawnbrokers understand that. unfortunately however, Timex watches just don’t carry a significant value and are very difficult for a pawnbroker to reasonable loan on/or buy, and then turn around and sell if they have to.

In my personal experience behind the counter of pawnshops, I can’t really remember a time that a customer has come in looking to buy a Timex watch, and keep the golden rule in mind. If a pawnbroker can’t sell an item, they can’t make a loan on it.

That having been said, if you really need some money out of your Timex watch and are otherwise out of options, I would suggest trying to sell it on Craigslist or the Facebook Marketplace. Just be sure to price it reasonably understanding that most people won’t find this type of watch very desirable and therefore, they aren’t going to be willing to pay an arm and a leg for it.
